Malta Goes Green

Small but mighty. This week, Malta will be the first European country to legalise the recreational use of cannabis. One can only dream of such progressive news in the UK.

Whilst Boris is over here battling the “war on drugs”, the Maltese parliament has approved a legislation bill to legalise marijuana and are waiting for the measure to be formally signed. The Government is predicting the law to take effect from this weekend.

Those over the age of 18 will be able to possess up to 7 grams. Not only that, but it will be legal to grow up to 4 cannabis plants and store up to 50 grams of product at home. So what if you’ve got more than 7 grams on you? Possession of more than 7 grams but less than 28 grams will set you back €50 to €100 without a threat of jail time or any tarnish to your criminal record.

They might be the smallest member of the European Union, but Malta is truly a trendsetter. Just last month, Germany’s new coalition parties announced a formal agreement to legalise cannabis. In the spring, Italian voters may get a referendum to legalise the personal cultivation of marijuana and other psychoactive plants. It seems like the rest of Europe is moving forward whilst we’re stuck with Boris’s ten-year shit show of a drug plan.

Well, at least we know the Maltese will be having a very merry Christmas. We love that for Malta, go Malta!
